What retail stores in Australia usually are happy to do work experience?
Q. I'm 15 and I have to do work experience for school. I'm thinking of using this to try and get a part-time job. I'm thinking something like retail, or similar like a supermarket, but I just want to know what stores usually accept work experience. I have to do it for a week and work a full day. Any ideas??? I don't want to do fast food.

What retail stores are not in danger of closing in time of a recession?
Q. I am trying to find a loss prevention position at a retail store, do you know which ones will not close? Walmart, Sam's Club, what else?

A. Costco, Target, Macy's; any of the very large stores that sell a product people need or are large & established enough to weather the storm.

How to start up and manage a retail clothing store at mall?
Q. I am going to start up a retail clothing business. I'd like to open it at a mall but dont know the best way to find couple employees with retail clothing experiences to help with cashier and customer services. What are the average pay for retail employees full or part-time at the mall, and what are the benefits employee get? Also, what kind of software the stores are using at the mall to sell and keep stock inventories. I am new and have no idea how to do it right. Please advises. Thank you for your time. Regards, Kent

A. Hello Kent In a mall setting, you will no doubt be required to follow a LOT of mall policies, specifically hours they set, days open, holiday hours and more. Also, be careful about signing any contracts/leases for more than one year at a time. You just don't know how the store will do and you don't want to be tied to a long term contract if something does not work out. Once you hire employees you will be required to pay state unemployment taxes, federal unemployment taxes, submit reports and file tax payments monthly and or quarterly and annually. Contact your state government and see what they require for new business startup. Start small, don't take out a huge loan, don't run up your charge cards, do not put everything you own at… [cont.]

What is retail merchandising and where can I find information for it?
Q. This is for a competitive event, any help or information regarding retail merchandising, and its principles would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by shawny - Sat Feb 3 12:36:10 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Retail merchandising usually refers to the point of puchase (POP) activities manufacturers and retailers perform. For example, Pepsi may have some special display racks in front of Supermarkets' cashiers. The goal of retail merchandising is to make the "final sales pitch" to the shoppers to switch to your brand or to buy more if they're buying already. To achieve this, you need to consider a lot of factors like coordination and consistency with other advertising and promotion campaigns, your competitors' price promotion period, retailers' promotional allowance, etc.

What is the best way to get into retail with no retail/work experience?
Q. I would assume most people with a lot of retail experience must have started somewhere. I find that a lot of retailers won't even give you a thought if you apply without retail experience.
Asked by Omega - Mon Sep 21 13:00:07 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depending on how old you are &the availability you have you may have to start somewhere small &low paying. Stores like Sears &Target are constantly hiring and usually only look for a friendly face with the right availability. Being 18 or older also helps since they will be able to schedule you at any time that they please ¬ break any laws. Don't give up. Keep trying most stores provide training anyway. Good luck.

The job applicant asked the manager about his applicantion, and about getting an interview. Next the manager said offensive things to the applicant, over the phone. The manager went off on how he (the applicant), doesn't have what it takes to be a successful employee, and starts calling the applicant, all kinds of names. A. I would certainly write and complain. Clearly lay out your case in order adding times and dates. Explain the abuse you received. Many companies do not get complaints about their managers, and rely on the public to keep them informed. Consequences. That will depend upon the relationship between the manager in question and the upper management. It could result in a slap on the wrist to disciplinary action such as a warning.

A. Tax (retail) certificate (its not a license) is from the franchise tax board. Business license is from city government. Permit for ammno--that I do not know, sorry. Shipping ammo--ask at UPS or the post office what that would entail.

What is the easiest retail credit card to get approved for?
Q. I have one judgment (paid), and two older collections (paid), a secured installment loan, and one credit card with a low limit. Never been late on the last two. I am trying to establish a good mix of credit. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with the retail cards.

A. I would avoid 'retail' credit cards altogether. They have extremely high interest rates-- and lots of hidden fees. You might consider a credit card designed for poor / no credit here: While these credit cards have slightly higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards-- they're much cheaper than a store / retail card. Plus, they'll allow you to build and improve your credit history over time. Hope this helps. good luck!

Is a Retail & Consumer Science degree good for someone who wants to open up a retail business?
Q. I want to start my own line of active wear and open up my own store. Obviously a business degree is a good path to go, however, I'm not sure I'd really like it. My university offers a Retail & Consumer Science degree- is this a good way to go? Or is this a bs degree that would be a waste of my money? Thanks!

A. From the universities I know that offer this degree, it certainly couldn't hurt. But, if I remember correctly the course requirements. there was not much in the way of design & manufacture for clothing lines. It was more about sourcing wholesale and retail management in addition to basic business courses. You should see if there is a way to minor in fashion design or do a custom major of fashion design combined with retail and consumer science. I would recommend, in addition to your school work, getting a job with a retail store to learn the ropes first hand. There is a lot to business that can't be learned in the classroom or in books. There is nothing like real experience to know what people like what they don't and how they behave… [cont.]

Why does Arbonne International charge state tax on retail price when buying wholesale?
Q. Cannot get a straight answer on why. When you purchase something on sale you pay tax on sale amount not the price on pre-sale amount. Arbonne charges you retail tax on bonus products or if the products are discounted. So if you are a wholesale member you will pay tax on retail prices.
Asked by Chacha P - Fri Mar 7 15:01:37 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You have two choices: If Arbonne has agreements with each state government, which they should, you can make your claim to Arbonne for any overpaid taxes. I'm sure that you sell wholesale to your downline and then they end-up collecting taxes at the point-of-sale. In this case, you should charge your downline the same taxes you pay, and let them deal with it. If you sell products at retail for less than the amount that Arbonne computes, then you can make a claim to Arbonne for the difference. This would also apply to items that you consume for personal use or product demonstrations. If Arbonne requires you to be set-up as a Resale Vendor with your state (I highly doubt that this is the case), then you can claim your refund (if any)… [cont.]

A. Keep trying, don't give up. Right now, during the holidays, everyone is busy trying to make quota in retail, and now would not be the best time worrying about a position in another area. Have you tried going through a professional job search? When you post on line, you are literally competing with hundreds of other applicants who, more than likely, have experience. On line, you almost have to have an exact fit, unfortunately. However, again, I would not give up. I would continue to apply, other than on line, and seek professional help; you will find a position eventually, just keep trying and don't give up! Good Luck!

How to get namebrand apparel for an independently owned retail clothing store?
Q. Like how do I open up a retail clothing store that carries popular namebrands? Do I have to contact the brand companies directly and do they actually work with small retail businesses?

A. I do not know where you live nor do I care! what gives you any idea at all that you have any chance at all (staying in business) (let alone getting into business) if you don't even have a clue as to how or who to buy your goods from? ... My God, I would say good luck but you are going to need a whole lot more than that.
