What's the best way to network for someone who hates networking?
Q. I work in a very people-oriented business. I enjoy meeting people but I'm also a little shy to start off. I also hate the whole "networking" culture because it seems so shallow and fake and all about using people. And yet, I hear I'm supposed to network to be successful. So what's the best way to network for someone who is a little shy but still well-liked yet doesn't naturally acclimate to the networking culture? What advice do you have or do you know of a good book that can guide me?

A. I know exactly what you're going through. I'm very shy around new people myself and it takes a while for me to get comfortable with other people. What I like to do when I met new people is concentrate on THEM. Don't bother talking about yourself the entire time to try and impress them. Just ask them questions about their job, where they've worked where, where they're from, what they're interested in. They'll enjoy being the centre of attention, eventually you'll find some sort of common ground that you can build on. Networking is a harsh reality in today's world and unfortunately it's very closely related to a popularity contest. How important is it to memorize the terms in networking out in the workforce?
Q. I am currently in a IT program in networking and having a little trouble with remembering all the technical terminology. Is it important to memorize all of them or do like some people keep books in their office or whatever just for reference if they forget?

How can I start a conversation with someone over a social networking site?
Q. There's a girl I kinda like on a social networking site. She lives in the same town as me but I've never seen her around. I'd like to start speaking to her on the site but I'm paranoid about coming across as creepy, desperate or stupid. Is it a good idea to start talking to someone this way, and if so how would I start a conversation?
