A self-service laundry is a facility where clothes are washed and dried. They are known in the United Kingdom as launderettes or laundrettes, and in the United States, Canada, and Australia as laundromats (from the genericized trademark of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation) or washaterias. George Edward Pendray created the word "laundromat" for Westinghouse.

Staffed laundries

Some laundries employ staff to provide service for the customers. Minimal service centres may simply provide an attendant behind a counter to provide change, sell washing powder, and watch unattended machines for potential theft of clothing. Others allow customers to drop off clothing to be washed, dried, and folded. This is often referred to as Fluff & Fold, Wash-n-Fold, bachelor bundles, a service wash or full-service wash. Some staffed laundry facilities also provide dry cleaning pick-up and drop-off. There are over 35,000 laundries throughout the United States. Similar services exist in the United Kingdom where the terms service wash or full-service wash are also in use.

Fluff n Fold services

The evolution of self-serve laundry services have been seen in some "fluff n fold" services provided by various laundromats. These services provide the end user with wash, dry, and folding services on a per pound basis. Some services offer free pickup and delivery as well as complimentary laundry bags as part of their customer appreciation. Additionally, dry-cleaning services have been known to utilize the pickup and delivery as a means to help generate additional revenue.

Do front loading clothes washers designed for home use work better than the types they have at laundromats?
Q. Based on the terrible performance of front loading clothes washers at laundromats, it would be hard to convince me to buy one for use at home. Is there a significant difference in performance and features with the front loading washers they sell for use at home (non-commerical)?

A. Hi, I have a front loader made by Whirlpool. They use less water, so less detergent must be used. It's a great machine when it works. In the past 3 years, it has broken down 3 times. It's the digital control panel that dies. I'm running out of warranty. So, if you buy one, get a reliable brand like Maytag and all the extended warranties you can. I think the estimated cost of the control panel is 250 dollars. Most experts agree that all washing machines will clean clothes effectively these days. I would have purchased a top loader for all the trouble. Once it took the service men 3 weeks to show up. A real bummer. Have a great day and choose wisely.

A. Interesting question. Most plausible answer I found is that it probably serves as a way to grab your attention. FTA: (...) irritating ads or upside-down text may be more attention-getting, and under that theory this ad could be very effective. After all, there s a long tradition of displaying laundromat signs upside-down or with misspellings
