Is leather furniture sticky to sit on in the summer and cold in the winter?
Q. I am looking at replacing my living room furniture this year and I need some suggestions? First, we have 2 cats (and yes they sometimes scratch the ends of the sofa and loveseat that we have now-in fact it looks horrible) 2. The upholstery fabic we have now has piles all over it? I don't want to go down that road again when we choose new living room furniture. The room it will go in will be sat on constantly (no formal living room in my house) and occasionally napped on. I need suggestions. I not not going to spend a fortune on the new furniture, but I would be willing to spend some extra for it to last for at least 5-7 years (if not longer). Any feedback would be appreciated.

A. Yes leather is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I have leather in the vehicle i drive and put some cloth seat covers on them. If you have cats they will ruin that leather. I have a cat long haired and she sheds on my furniture. I keep a blanket or sheet where she likes to sleep .. Its hard when you have cats. But i had rather have cloth at least you can use one of those sticky roller brushes and get most of it up. I have had the same sectional sleeper sofa for 10 yrs now.and it still looks good.

How should I go about getting furniture for a move to New York? Nice and cheap furniture stores in NY?
Q. I'm moving to New York in October and trying to figure out the best and cheapest way for me to get new furniture. I live in Tennessee, and there are a lot of nice and large-chain furniture stores down here that I can get good deals with. However, transporting and moving furniture might be a problem and getting it delivered up there is not an option. Are there a lot of nice and cheap furniture stores in New York or in surrounding areas?

Commerical furniture delivery - How do you send coffee tables by freight?
Q. I am in the process of setting up a small furniture making business and I need to know how do you go about sending coffee tables etc that are not flat- packed. I would imagine that you would bubble-wrap the items and then get a freight company like Fedex to pick them up. Is it that easy? Should I consider putting these type of items in crates. The coffee tables I have made would be sent out lndividually to customers. They are not overly expensive and really not that large. But would Fedex etc accept this type of furniture without being crated. If it is OK to send just by bubble-wrapping, what is the best way to do this to ensure the items does not get damaged? I would also be sending out the coffee tables etc to international customers. [cont.]

A. Me and my wife had some furniture delivered from the pottery barn a few months ago. We had two nitestands, a big dresser and a head board and they basically put the two nitestands and dresser in big boxes reinforced with plywood strips and lots of stryrofoam, all kinds of it too. And all of our furniture was delivered flawless. not so much as a smuge. I can sort of see why the delivery charge was kind of steep.

How do i pack my furniture during long absence?
Q. Hi, we are buying a new set of sofa (Leather), a new dining table (glass top with steel/aluminium bottom) and a cot (wooden). We would be using it for 2 months. Later we would be going to a different place for 4 to 5 years before we get back here again and use this furniture. During this long absence we are planning to pack all the furniture and lock it up in a room till we get back (after 4 to 5 years). Please let me know how I can pack these pieces of furniture and with what material should I pack such that once we get back the furniture is still in good shape as it would be today. Your ideas and suggestions would be of great help to me. Regards Sangeetha

A. Just sheets/drop cloths to keep the dust off. I wouldn't wrap in plastic as the leather needs to breathe. Also, don't stack the upholstered pieces, it will collapse the padding over time. If space requires stacking the items, I'd build a simple platform (2x4's and plywood) to place one piece above another. It would also be a good idea to give all metal pieces a heavy coat of furniture paste wax to prevent rust/corrosion.

What should I use to clean furniture contaminated by mold that won't hurt particleboard and wood finishes?
Q. I recently moved all of my furniture that had been in a climate-controlled storage unit for 1 year into my new apartment. My couch grew mold in the storage unit, so I threw it out. The rest of my furniture is primarily particleboard (bookcases, dressers, etc.) and some wood. What should I use to clean this furniture to make sure that there is no mold on it and that won't destroy the furniture? Thank you!

A. Go into a furniture store with a cameraman so that it looks like you are making a television programme. Tell them you are decorating a business premises for someone who has recently had a lot of health problems or make up some other hard-luck story, and they may lose their business due to the stress. They will be willing to donate to a 'good cause' on 'television', and you'll be happy knowing that they are feeling good because they think they're helping this person. This may be fraud, i'm not sure, I wouldn't do it, but it will work if you play it well.

Q. Hi experts - I am trying to sell my condo after a divorce so alot of the furniture has already been moved out. I feel like I have heard of some kind of service like this before, however I can't seem to find it on the web. Does anyone know of anything like this or have any other suggestions? A. I'd go with white, for either metal or wood. It will look nice and clean along with the white trim. If you choose to do a natural wood, I'd keep it light. Remember, even though white will show dirt, dark colors show the DUST!

How often does furniture inventory turnover at a large retailer?
Q. We've found furniture that we like but aren't moving into our new house for about 6-8 months as it is being built. We don't have any room to put new furniture but don't want it to be gone/discontinued by the time we need to buy it.
Asked by MO - Wed Feb 6 14:19:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends. Some retailers sell "open stock" They order furniture, often by the container load, and sell it when it comes in. When it's gone, it's gone and they may or may not order more of the same or even keep the same manufacturer. Others sell a manufacturer's line and will have display models and inventory or order things just like it as sold. They will continue to sell as long as the manufacturer makes that model and/or they have some in inventory. Others are "made to order" particularly upholstered furniture. You pick out the style and the fabric (sometimes from 1000s of options). As long as the fabric is available (average lifespan 3-5 years) they will make it for you. The other thing to do is just ask the retailer. They… [cont.]

Is furniture cheaper in High Point North Carolina or at the Room Store?
Q. I keep hearing about Highpoint North Carolina but is their furniture really cheaper? The room store you can buy a nice sofa for about $800 but am I going to find lower prices in Highpoint, NC?
Asked by youngk - Wed Dec 5 15:37:43 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I live and own a furniture company in High Point( wholesale) 10 years ago furniture was still made in the USA but now the majority of all cased goods and leather furniture is imported from Asia and shipped by container to stores direct. I suggest buy local for these items because stores in High Point have no competitive edge to your local stores who buys containers. Some of the sofas and bedding are still made in the USA. What you can find in High Point are Furniture Market Samples that are usually sold at a great discount and there are In Home Delivery companies that will deliver it to you anywhere in the country for a surprising decent price.

What are some decent furniture retailers in london?
Q. I can't count how many times I've looked through the IKEA website! I would appreciate some good suggestions about other retailers I could look at that supply home furniture that isn't the cheapest nor the most expensive, and isn't likely to break down in a few years. (Not John Lewis or Deben-something) Actually that depends whether it's a coat hanger or a bed i'm buying. But overall, just good places (preferably with a website) that sell furniture worth the money. Thanks!!!

A. oh don't you hate that when they scratch RIGHT in front of you.. worse than a 2 year old! I've tried the sprays.. they only turn their noses away for a few hours then their back! And my cats got so use to me spraying they became immune to the smell. All I can say is consistency.. just gotta keep hissing at them .. until they get use to your jumping at them that they scare off.. I hiss at my girl cat.. she seems to be the only that still does it..

How do you remove furniture polish from a tv screen?
Q. My neighbors son got a hold of some furniture polish and got it on the tv screen. :( What can be used to remove the grime/smear of furniture polish? Thank you!
Asked by livebyh20 - Mon Mar 29 01:55:51 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Windex or any window cleaner that contains ammonia will do te job. If the tv is a flat screen, there is a special cleaner to use on it. This cleaner can be found at Wal Mart in the Electronics Dept. There's a special cloth to use on a flat screen, so buy one if it doesn't come with the cleaner. If it's just a regular tv screen, window cleaner will cut through the polish.

What color furniture should i get for my living room with dark brown carpet?

The walls are white and i am not allowed to paint them. Should i do wood furniture?Black? I don't know what color couches to get as well. Please help and if you have any pictures that would help out. Asked by Bri - Fri May 7 16:37:45 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Purchase upholstered pieces (couch and chairs) with textured neutral colors so these peices can move with you and work where ever you live for the next five to seven years or more. Add your color with accessories in the way of pillows, draperies, art work, lamps, nick nacks and the like. A small apartment will look more roomy if your main pieces are lighter neutral colors. A way to add color and pattern to a room for very little money is to stretch a great piece of fabric over a canvas and staple it to the frame. It's simple, inexpensive and it can have a huge impact in a space if it is a rather large canvas. It also gives you an opportunity to use that fabric again in the room or use coordinating fabric to bring the room together… [cont.]

When restaining furniture is it better to use a plain stain or one that is a combination stain and finishing?
Q. I have several pieces of stained furniture that have been damaged by different things sitting on them and ruining the finishes. I want to try to finish them to look like the original finish but have not been very successful. Any suggestions as to what to do will be appreciated.

A. Best to use regular stain. Then apply finish after. You cant really just touch up spots. Generally you strip the finish off the top, re-stain then apply finish.

What paint colors go with light oak furniture in a nursery?
Q. I just found and bought a light oak furniture set for the babies room. I was planning on dark cherry, and I had an entire room picked out (brown and aqua). When the price of the light oak set was too good to turn down, I bought that instead. Now my whole room has to change, and I'm panicking. I always get dark furniture, now I have really light furniture with a yellow tone (not my strong suit). What wall colors would make me love this nursery again? Help!
