Why flights coming to USA from Europe takes the route in the shape of arch over atlantic ocean and canada?
Q. Most flights coming from Asia and travelling over europe takes route of arch over atlantic ocean and canada instead of going straight to USA. Logically, The straight route should be the shortest one. So whats the reason behind the route in the shape of arch? Anyone answering this question, please give me the website link from where I can have more readings in detail.

A. First of all, the earth is round, ie. 3-dimensional. If you went straight, you go off into space. Picture the shortest route from 89 N 90 E to 89 N 90 W. You wouldn't follow the parallel around the pole, you would go over the pole. If you look at a globe, you will find that the shortest point would project to an arch if laid onto a 2-D map. If you are looking for another web site, I would recommend Google Earth. Turn on the lat/long lines and you will see what I mean.
