Does any one know of any pet stores in Chicago that buy baby Apple Snails?
Q. My Apple snail laid and hatched two egg clutches in my 20 gallon tank. Now my tank is over run with the little snails and I can't bring myself to throw them away. Please help me!

A. Petsmart and Petco may buy them, they bought my red tailed shark, but I doubt any local stores would buy them.

Can Two Apple Snails And Two Small Ramshorn Snails Live Together
Q. Hi. I have two goldfish, two apple snails and two ramshorn snails that are going to be living together in a fairly large tank. I need to know if they will eat each other or breed with each other. I would rather answers from experts but any help is fine. Thanks. Thanks Fish Man. How Long Can The Spple Snail Survive Out Of Water. It Is The Type Of The One In The Picture.

A. No, these snails won't eat each other. They'll only eat the algae, dead plants, leftover food, etc. Just be careful if one of the big apple snials die because the decomposing flesh from the snail will kill most other things in the tank. The ramshorns should breed like crazy.

Whats the best way to post apple snails?
Q. What is the safest way to send 1 large apple snail through the post, Is it best to keep them in a bag of water or make them 'clam up' and wrap them in something moist? Any help or tips would be great! Any reference web sites I could look at? I could not find any.

A. Why would you take it out for feeding, though? It wouldn't be much of a threat as long as you keep him moist, but I highly doubt that a snail is outcompeting your fish for food... There really is no reason to... EDIT: Just tie some lettuce to a rock and the snail will find it. It won't eat well above water, but putting it in a large dish with tank water and the food could be effective.

Waste products from apple snails?
Q. I have recently bought an apple snail with my tank. The lady in the pet shop said they don't excrete much waste into the water. On the web i've found mixed information on this. Some sites say they are bad and others say the same as the pet shop. Does anyone know roughly how much waste product is excreted by apple snails and what sort of waste products they are? Ammonia, nitrates, nitrites etc... Thanks I meant for my tank... i've had the tank a while.
Asked by belladonna supreme - Fri Nov 7 16:02:29 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, even though snails clean up, and enjoy eating waste of other fish, they do excrete quite a bit of waste. Just about as much as any fish though, below Goldfish, as they are messy, messy fish. Your apple snail being introduced with your tank won't do MUCH damage to the ammonia in your tank, but it will add onto it a bit. It is mostly ammonia, but depending on the size of your snail, more comes with a bigger size.

What is wrong with my Apple Snails?
Q. I just recently got 9 Apple/Mystery Snails. They were all acting just fine roaming around and eating. Now all but one of them is laying upside down almost fully in their shells. I picked on up to see if I touched him if he would go in his shell fully. He did not move at all. The other one is moving very slowly and is not all the way out of his shell like normal. . Are they dead? What is wrong with them? Has anyone had this happen before?

A. I think they are fine, If they were dead you would be able to pull them out of there shells, if they arent already. apple snails do this from time to time, i dont know if they are hibernating or just resting but they should be fine in a week or two, maybe even a few days. Good luck =)

What different foods do you feed your apple snails?
Q. I currently give my snails algae wafers, dried blood worms and they really LOVE peas. But what other foods should I give them for variety? Also they're shells are kind of deteriorating. What would be good to give them to make them stronger? I tried cuttlebone in the water but they wanted nothing to do with it. I also tried the calcium things that are really for turtles and again, they wanted nothing to do with it.
Asked by KarenGus - Tue Feb 27 18:59:41 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the calcium is important - they won't eat it but it will dissolve slowly and help nourish their shells. What is fun is to take a very thin slice of a cucumber - about as thick as a nickel - and let it float on the surface. Don't ask me how but they will find it and hold on. then they will eat it from the center outward to the edges. If the snails are small enough they will drift around the tank attached to the piece of cucumber until it is nearly gone. Remove any uneaten bits of the cuc each day as they will foul the water.

Apple snails, how long do their eggs take to hatch?
Q. Now that I know my snails are apple snails I was wondering how long their eggs will take to hatch? Also do apple snails mate or reproduce on their own?
Asked by Shaye - Thu Mar 26 16:11:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Apples snails are not asexual. They need a male and female to reproduce. Also, depending on the exact species, some will lay egg clutches above the water line and others below the water line. I will link you to a website to explain more about it. Just be warned that if you have a mated pair, you will end up with a lot of babies. And I do mean a lot. I'd gotten two "golden" apple snails and one day when I needed to take water from their tank, I didn't fill it back up to the top. The next day I had a clutch of eggs above the waterline. Then eventually I had five clutches (all within a month of each other). I actually found two more last night in the lighting part of the hood. I had to take them out and put them in a bag to throw away. Each… [cont.]

What is the best tapsafe for Apple snails?
Q. i have copper in my water and it is not safe for apple what tapsafe
Asked by SMILE - Wed Jul 2 12:55:32 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The amount of copper in your tap water is minimal, and will have little affect on the snails. Unless you've got copper piping that's a few decades old, there won't be nearly enough copper in the water to do any damage at all. If you're still concerned, conditioners like Prime and NovAqua or NovAqua+ bind heavy metals (like copper), essentially neutralizing them.

How often do gold apple snails lay eggs?
Q. One snail died a couple of weeks ago. Now the other started laying eggs everywhere. Will they hatch if there is just one?
Asked by tari4aqha - Wed Mar 28 10:14:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes the eggs will hatch even is there is no other snail in the tank. Snails are hermaphrodites, and if one has been fertilized it can continue to lay eggs for several months. The eggs need no supervision after they have been laid, and once they start to hatch you are going to have a problem because they can start to reproduce rather quickly. Unless you want a billion snails I would suggest removing all the eggs you can see, even then you are still going to have a lot of extra snails in the tank. Gold fish. and some Loaches will eat them while they are small so adding one of these fish might be a good idea. Good Luck. E.

A. Snails will grow faster if they have more food and better quality water. (Cleaner and more oxygen). Thats easier to maintain in a larger tank. It's not directly related to the tank size, but a bigger tank is generally better. Ian

How to keep Apple Snails happy?
Q. What conditions are ideal? What pH, temp., substrate, do they need to burrow? A lot of questions I know but I'd appreciate help from anyone who has had real success with snails. A. I've kept them in the same conditions as tropical fish. They are very sensitive to copper which can be introduced via tap water. Use any of the common water conditioners to treat for copper. They like hard water. Otherwise, their shells can deteriorate. I never use any special foods such as lettuce because of the mess. My snails are fed on flake fish food. As apple snails prefer to hide themselves in darker places during daytime, some stones, a trunk or some plants are well appreciated. Yes, they also have the habit of burying in the substrate in search for food and when they aestivate in the winter periods. Sand is a good choice. A. "How old do apple snails get? The apple snail's life expectancy mainly depends on the temperature of their environment and the general life conditions. At lower temperatures, the apple snail can get over 3 years old and records of apple snails of ten years old have been reported. Lanistes nyassanus has an estimated life span of 5 to 10 years in Lake Malawi, Africa. At a temperature of 25 C, they will only live 12-16 months. At higher temperatures, the snails are more active because their metabolism increases with the temperature, but this also speeds up their life cycle and thus shortens their life expectancy. So you can elongate your snail's life by lowering the temperature. A general rule: keep the temperature between 18 and 28 C (65-82 [cont.]

A. To keep your snails healthy, feed them on a regular base with vegetables (lettuce, cucumber, small pieces of carrots, green beans and celery), weeds from the garden and ordinary fish food. Apple snails will live about 18 to 24 months when kept in water at a temperature of 82 degrees F. At a temperature of 65 degrees F snails have a life span of at least 3 years perhaps as long as 10 years. Generally, the cooler the water the longer the Snails will live. But these Snails do not live well at a temperature below about 65 degrees F.

Q. My girlfriends friend really wants one for her birthday. If I could find one then both would be thrilled. I know they don't have them at Petsmart or Jack's Aquarium. Does anyone know of any independently owned aquarium stores around Cinci?

A. I wounder why??. the electric yellow labs need at least a 20 gallon tank it is killing every thing because he doesn't have enough room rather then spending money on snails you need to be investing money in a tank suited for your fish it would also help if you read up on african cichlids !!!
