Apple snail.....?
Q. I have a golden apple snail, but right now it's a green apple snail, so I'm wondering how do u clean a apple snail without harming them. do u just take a tooth brush to them or do u need to get a special cleaning stuff? thanks I have a five gallon tank with a goldfish he's about 3 1/2in so I need some thing thats ok for him too.

A. A soft toothbrush should work, but I'd be very careful around the opening in case it doesn't withdraw into the shell. You may have to do a bit of scrubbing with a paper towel, or even a cue tip. Also, algaecides are also highly toxic to inverts and will kill your snail quite quickly.

How long does it take for an apple yellow snail to grow up?
Q. How long does it take for an apple snail to grow up enough to breed again? And how many snails can I have in a ten gallon fish tank? Taking into account that I am breeding betta fishes also. Would the grow up bettas try to eat the baby snails? Thank you!
Asked by racm_86 - Fri Sep 28 22:37:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They are continuously growing, so as long as you keep it healthy, it should keep growing. You can keep about 3-4 apple snails in a ten gallon tank. As for the bettas, they are agressive fish, and they may or may not try to nip at the snail.

can i keep an apple snail in a cold water tank with goldfish?
Q. i have a 10 litre coldwater aquarium in my bedroom and just wondered if i could keep and apple snail in it with a couple of goldfish. btw my goldfish wont get any bigger than about 4 cm so a 10 litre tank is not too small thank you very much!

A. you should get 2 apple snails. i have two goldfish and 2 apple snails in my tank and they're fine. just make sure you feed the goldfish cause once in a while they like to pick on the snails. oh and if u have a 10 litre tank, you need a bigger one. i made a huge mistake doing the same thing. i bought 2 tiny goldfish and expected them to stay the same size forever. they grew. aloottt. i ended up getting a bigger tank. but my advise overal is do not get a goldfish. seriously they are sooo messy you should only get one for an outdoor pond or such. after about the first month of having mine, i regretted not buying guppies. i would've appreciated it if someone gave me the same advice before i bought my goldfish

how can i stop my golden apple snail floating?
Q. i've got a lovely great big golden apple snail but i think he must have some air in his shell. Several times a day he lets go of the side and just floats. If i pick him up and turn him over, he curls up in his shell, thus pushing the air back inside him so I can never get it out.

A. Haha, they always do that. If you think something is seriously wrong, ask a vet or petstore.

Would it be okay to put a small apple snail in the tank with my betta?
Q. I have a male betta in a tank and I'm wondering if it would be okay to put an apple snail in there with him. Would my fish nip at it or anything? Also, are snails asexual? Because I'm getting only one and if it can have babies by itself I don't want it since I have no room for like twenty more snails. Also, besides algae and live plants what should I feed the snail? Is lettuce and bits of fruit okay? Thank you!

How long does it take a Golden Inca (Apple) Snail to get used to it's new environment?
Q. I bought a Golden Inca (Apple) Snail three days ago and all its done is sit on the substrate inside of its shell. It's in a fifteen gallon with a female Betta, two Mountain Minnows and two African Dwarf Frogs. Is it just scared? How long will it take for it to start eating algae off walls?
Asked by Rachel - Fri Mar 13 00:15:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They all, go through stress when moved from one environment to another. It should recover in a few days. When you bought the snail, was it on the bottom of the tank, or already climbing on the side? If it was on the bottom, it still hadn't recovered from the stress of being moved from the supplier. You should always buy snails that are already climbing the sides, which shows they've gotten over the stress. If it was still stressed at the pet shop and you moved it during this time, it may take longer to get over it, and could die due to all the stress. Once it's recovered from stressing, it will be hungry and start seeking food and algae.

Does the shell of an apple snail heal if it is broken?
Q. I bought some live plant for an aquarium and the guy threw in an apple snail (a large aquarium snail) for free since I bought so many. The snail seems fine and acts normal, however there is a small hole in the side of his shell. The clerk said a rock was dropped on it accidentally. Do these grow back or is this something the snail will have the rest of its life?
Asked by Good Time Production - Mon Feb 22 23:26:05 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The actual shell that grows out can not be repaired the same way it is produced, however the snail can and probably will (if healthy) create a protein substance to internally patch the hole. Once there are not any predators that will pick at the snail and the hole isn't large, it should be just fine. I had a Gh and pH issue with my 20 gal long tank filled with Bridgesii and their shells started to deteriorate. The shells became soft and some got damaged beyond repair and died. However, when I finally got my general hardness under control the pH gradually rose to a good 7.8 and the snails have generated the protein patches. It isn't as strong as a healthy snail's shell, but it keeps pathogens from coming in and innards from getting out. … [cont.]

A. yes but do not rince or wash the gravel at all you can dump the gravel into a colender and then put it right back into the bowl with out washing or rinceing it you don't want to lose all of the good bacteria and over 90 percant of it is in the gravel personnley I wouldn't do what your wanting to do and for your puffer ask your local pet store for some common pond snails like rams horns they will give them to you for free and your puffers will love them they also will reproduce faster for you than the apple snails

How much of the apple snail will the puffer eat?
Q. I own a figure 8 puffer, and I recently learned that I must feed him snails for his teeth. It attacks the snail sometimes but doesn't eat all of it. Should I leave it in until it eats more of it? How much of the snail will it eat? Do I remove the snail when it's dead? When should I remove the snail?
Asked by J. - Wed Aug 5 19:59:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Don't leave the snail in there after the puffer has fed--it will pollute the water. If you want to save the remains put them in the freezer and feed him the rest of the snail a few days later. The serving of snail per meal should be no bigger than the puffer's eye. Remove the snail immediatley after the puffer has eaten a sufficient amount, if you leave a whole snail in the tank--unless it's really tiny--the puffer will eat until it's so bloated it sinks to the bottom of the tank, occasionally they can eat themselves to death.

A. Well, you don't mention your aquarium's size, but it's a fair bet that it's too small for the Pleco at least. Common Plecos need a minimum of 75-gallons. Anything under 30-gallons is too small even for a temporary home. Your Tiger Barbs need at least 20-gallons, and they need to be kept in groups of 6 or more. I suggest you do a lot of research into the needs of fish, return any fish whose requirements you can't meat, and only then worry about adding more critters to your tank. My golden apple snail's shell is deteriorating so i need to add calcium drops to the tank.I was wondering if..
Q. this will harm the fish in my tank? I have a 30 gallon tank with tropical community fish such as guppies, tetras, a kissing gourami, and a pleco. So will these calcium drops for my apple snail harm my other fish??

A. it will increase the stress on the tetras and pleco, but they should be fine. on another note, a kissing gorami gets too big for your tank, as they reach almost a foot in length. Plecos also get too big for your tank, as they reach 18in.

How long should I give my apple snail before presuming him dead?
Q. He has been upside down with his "door" closed for more than 24 hours. There is a bit of his tissue outside the opening and he has not moved at all. The reason why I ask is because I have noticed snails in the past do this and they would come back. How do I know if he is dead? I guess it should be mentioned in this instance- I can't smell.

A. Usually 48 hours is the most that I would leave a dormant snail. Another thing you could do is give the snail a "Wiff" if it smells like death then more than likely it is dead.
