What type of vending machine do I need to sell bulk items?
Q. I am thinking about starting a vending route and would like to know more about the machines before investing a large amount of money into something that may not be my best bet. Are there bulk item machines? None of my items are going to be refrigerated food, so I don't think I need that option. But I would like to sell baby toys, diapers, food, advil, wipes ect...If you have any ideas to point me in the right direction that would be great.

A. You want a regular snack machine (5-6ft tall). The good brands are: Rowe, Automatic Products, and National. A good used one is 800-1400. New are 2-3K. You will need wide spirals for bigger items. You can look one ebay if your carefull. Find one close to you, with a warranty. They are 500-600 lbs, so have help to move. Test dollar bill acceptor and buy something to get change to see if the coin mech works. ?'s, email rualst@yahoo.com

A. While vending machines use a variety of methods to read bills, they check four different characteristics used to verify paper money: Bills are printed with magnetic ink, and different denominations generate distinctive magnetic fields. Bills have different conductivities (the rate at which they can conduct low levels of electricity). Ultraviolet scanning technology can determine the different fluorescent properties of bills. Digital cameras can reference the optical patterns in bills with a database of authentic patterns. A vending machine has to verify whether a bill is authentic before it determines its value. A. Any major city will have several vending machine providers. They'll install the machines, keep them stocked with food/beverage and you can set the price to either their prices or a small markup. Google "vending machines in Boston" or wherever you are.

A. Better yet - check out this one: www.moobella.com I'm the engineer behind the pneumatic system in this machine. I'm not about to explain how it works, but there are about 40 motors, and 500 feet of tubing that allow it to make hard scoop ice cream on the spot from the raw ingredients - takes about 40 seconds, and it's SO much better than soft serve.

A. My co-worker's dad has has an ice cream truck business for 10 years. He has supported himself his wife and two kids with this business. Put them through school, bought them cars, etc. According to my co-worker his dad brings in close to 100k a year. I don't know if that's true but it looks like it's profitable enough to support a small family and a mortgage. He also wanted to tell you that his Dad has had a few attempted robberies but because he is in a truck he was able to fight off the robbers. But on a bike you're exposed so be careful on those bad neigborhoods. I wish you the best of luck in your business.

A. It's all location, location, location. You're going to be up against some big competition from established vending companies that have sometimes hundreds of machines in tons of locations. I would start small. Find a great location that doesn't already have a machine. A busy break room at a smaller company or business is one of the best places to start. Next you'll need a machine...the combo drink/snack machines are a great place to start. Also, bulk machines...such as candy/nuts/mints that you pay a quarter for a handful. Keep in mind that you don't want to have your machine somewhere it could get vandalized or broken into.

How much can I make a month from 4 vending machines in a good location? I plan to expand later.?
Q. I am interested in opening a vending machine company. I plan to place Gatorade machines in 4 seperate gym's. How much would I be able to make a month? I plan to take it further if 4 are successful.
Asked by Dale - Sat Nov 21 13:47:13 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've found for the most part that gyms aren't a very good location for vending. We've had Powerade and Vitamin Water in a few local mid size gyms (about half the size of a Gold's Gym) and the best machines do maybe $60 in a week, some have done less than $20 in a week. (That's $1 for 20oz Powerade and $1.50 for 20oz Vitamin Water) These machines really have trouble selling the product before it goes out of date. We do have a machine at a Lady Fitness that sells over $120 of Dasani a week (5 Cases) despite the fact that the machine is right in front of a water fountain. I'm guessing that the customers buy the Dasani and reuse the bottles at the fountain? Either way, you'll find that gyms are really hit or miss.

A. Purchasing a franchise is as easy as looking in any newspaper classified section. They are always for sale. I worked in this industry for about 8 years 20+ years ago. It's all different now. I'm out of it for a reason. Be careful. If you can make money on these small routes that companies are always flipping and selling they would hire employees and run the business route themselves. You might put out 10-20 thousand for a route and when you see you are not making money you get out and they sell it to someone else. That's how they make their money. Now, if you buy a legitimate company from someone retiring or moving that's running the route and making money then you might find a good deal but people making money usually don't give up their… [cont.]

A. I dont think there is a law, I work with a company that does vending. I just know you would get better business if you are available quick in case you need to fix a jam. Also, make sure the machines are clean. I do know you have to offer a good deal to businesses so that they can let you have your machines there.

Is a stair crawler suitable for lifting a vending machine up a big flight of stairs?
Q. We have a vending machine that we're trying to get up to the second story of a building. We can't use the lift. My Fiance's boss recommended hiring a stair crawler, which we can get for $99. I was just wondering if this is a good option. How many people would it need to operate it? Our vending machine is 300kg, so it's no small task.. Is it safe? Are we likely to drop it? I'm just freaking out a little and this is all new to me. Forgot to mention - the website says it is capable of lifting 300kg. I'm still a bit sceptical, though. Plus, the size of the machine is going to make it difficult..

They are not very light, but two strong people working together would be able to lift them away. The owner's of the businesses does not want me to bolt them to the floor or wall. A. They do make alarms for vending machines that operate from motion. If someone tries to move or shake machine it will set off alarm. You can find them from vending suppliers. This is the problem with the countertop vending machines. They seem to make sense until you start using them. You can find nice used equipment ( full size) on ebay.

What taxes am i subject to if i am running a vending company?
Q. i am going to operate and manage the vending in my stores i.e. candy, tattoos, stickers what do i need to do to get started? what taxes will i be subject to? what governing agencies will i report to?
Asked by JJ - Thu Jul 17 12:51:48 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. local state comptrollers office can help you with that. they will give you an tax-id, which will allow you to buy the items that go inside the machine taxfree. then whatever you make on the machine you pay taxes on the total, not the profit, but the total. probably around 6 - 9 cents for each dollar you collect. however remember its a cash bussiness they have no way of knowing what you actually made, I have heard of some venders making lts of money and only paying taxes on part of it, because no one can prove otherwise.

What is a healthy snack from the vending machines?
Q. What is a healthy snack to buy at a vending machine? What should I look for? At school there is usually cereal, Baked chips, Baked hot cheetos, goldfish flavor blasted, chex mix, rice krispies, famous amos cookies, different snack bars, and a few others etc..
Asked by alex - Thu Oct 16 20:22:20 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually there are only a few healthy snacks to choose from when buying from a vending machine. Out of what you listed the healthiest would probably be the chex mix or the cereal if it doesn't have tons of sugar in it. If they have granola bars that might be a good option too especially the Nature Valley brand. Also, check and see if they have any of the 100 calorie packs in the vending machine, I have seen more of those going in vending machines lately which is a good way to watch your calorie intake. But I'd suggest just bring a healthy snack from home. It would be cheaper than buying from a vending machine anyways.

A. Dont you have a meal plan at your school? Thats what I have, I usually eat at the cafe. Or sometimes I will buy stuff like milk and cereal and pop tarts or something like that to eat in the morning so i dont starve. But if u dont reside at ur college u should bring stuff with you to eat, its kinda hard to eat healthly from a vending machine, but if u were to buy something from it I would get some pretzels or a muffin or something like that. I suggest u stay away from sodas and get juice or water.
