Apple snails, how long do their eggs take to hatch?
Q. Now that I know my snails are apple snails I was wondering how long their eggs will take to hatch? Also do apple snails mate or reproduce on their own?
Asked by Shaye - Thu Mar 26 16:11:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Apples snails are not asexual. They need a male and female to reproduce. Also, depending on the exact species, some will lay egg clutches above the water line and others below the water line. I will link you to a website to explain more about it. Just be warned that if you have a mated pair, you will end up with a lot of babies. And I do mean a lot. I'd gotten two "golden" apple snails and one day when I needed to take water from their tank, I didn't fill it back up to the top. The next day I had a clutch of eggs above the waterline. Then eventually I had five clutches (all within a month of each other). I actually found two more last night in the lighting part of the hood. I had to take them out and put them in a bag to throw away. Each… [cont.]

A. Snail eggs depend on temperature. The warmer it is the faster the eggs will hatch. However you really don't want to attempt raising mystery snails...they lays hundreds of eggs.

How long does it take for a cerith snail to hatch / have a baby?
Q. I believe I have 3 cerith snails in my saltwater fish tank and I was wondering how long it takes for them to have babies or how long it takes for their eggs to hatch. I just saw a baby snail on the glass of my tank today.

A. Native to the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific off the coast of Mexico, the Cerith Snail does best in larger, well-established reef systems with deep sand beds. This voracious feeder is most active at night. In fact, breeding pairs of Cerith Snails will lay their eggs on your aquarium glass just after dark in long, stringy curves. However, since these eggs take a while to develop, they are often consumed by other tankmates or removed from the water column by filtration before the eggs have a chance to hatch. The Cerith Snail is extremely difficult to breed in captivity. Not only is determining the sexes difficult, but the water parameters required to do so are unknown. If you think you have babies try catching them and placing them in a… [cont.]

Can snails eggs that were attached to the top of the tank still hatch if they fall into the water?
Q. I was told at the pet shop that they had never seen this type of snail breed. I have had them for about 8 months now and was surprised to find their eggs attached to the top of the fish tank where they were staying moist but were not submerged. (The eggs are in a cylindrical cluster about as big around as a pencil and about 3 inches long. They are a pale gold, the same color as the snails.) Unfortunately I found them lying at the bottom of the fish tank this morning. I would assume that the snails laid their eggs out of the water to protect them from predators. Are they still viable if they are submerged? I'm not sure what type of snails they are. They're large, about 1&1/2" diameter, and pale gold/blond color.

What are the chances of my snails mating?
Q. I was gonna go to petsmart today and get about five apple snails. I think they are apple snailes they are like a tan colored snail and put them in my 30 gallon fish tank. What are the chances of them mating because I would like to have several snailes. If they would mate how long does it take for the eggs to hatch? please answer soon. Thanks!
Asked by Dance Dude - Thu Mar 19 10:01:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your chances are very good and should take about 2 weeks for the egg to hatch. However apple snails need to lay their eggs above water so you need to leave about 3-4 inches exposed at the top of your aquarium for them to lay eggs on the glass. the eggs also need to be kept warm and humid so you should occasionally mist them with water.

My brother's snails laid eggs... Help!?
Q. My brother has a freshwater fish tank. In there, among the fish, he has six snails, but he doesn't know what type. The only thing he knows is that these egg clutches were laid underwater. The egg clutches are like little long sausages, transparent and ruffled texture. They have been laid earlier today. What are the right procedures to follow to ensure these snails hatch.
Asked by radiocaf - Thu Feb 28 07:15:35 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First make sure your ready, your gonna have snails everywhere! If you do want them, just leave the eggs alone, they will hatch, and make sure you start feeding your fish a good 2-3 times a day so the fish won't be hungry enough to eat them. And enjoy! Snails are easy keepers, you don't even have to feed 'em, they live on the fish junk in your tank :-) Hope this helps!

A. The snails did probably ride in on your plants. The eggs on the glass are, indeed, snail eggs. I'm glad you like them, because you are about to have more snails than you can imagine. Your snail infestation will be hard to eradicate, because most any treatment that might get rid of snails would also harm your shrimp. Trying to pick out all the snails and snail eggs by hand is probably the best solution, although it takes a lot of time and persistence to eliminate them this way. I hear that birds like to eat snails, if you have pet birds or a bird feeder.

A. Most likely your mystery snails are actually P. Briggs which are either male or female not both. The eggs will hatch between 9 days to 3 weeks. Usually the first few batches are duds, if these are the first clutches your females have laid. When they hatch leave the clutch in the water with them for a couple days, the babies will eat off of it. Then you can feed the algae wafers, lettuce, green beans, broccoli, squash, cucumber, zucchini, etc. Green veggies are best as they have more calcium. Mystery snails do fine in ponds and yes the goldfish will try to eat the babies, they are omnivores and opportunistic feeders. When they are tiny you can leave them in a breeder net until they get a little bigger. I just had my first two clutches… [cont.]

A. It won't tank long... they are rapid at producing and hatching. If you have snail eating fish (Puffers for example) then you can transfer those eggs to a small tank or bowl with some plants life and let them hatch...you will have an endless supply of food! If you do not want your tank over-run like crazzzy, get them out. snails are a big bio-load, do have some beneficial factor to them, but are basically plant eating poopoing machines. Good Luck! much peace :)

A. If the snails you got are mystery or Apple snails then more then likely you have eggs. The cacoon of eggs will be a red/orangy colour. All you have to do is make sure the outter layer of eggs is damp not soking wet but damp other wise you'll drown the babies. take a squirt bottle and just spray 2 times then leave them. Only spray the eggs if they look like they are drying out. Or if you have a lid on your tank then you shouldn't have to spray them there should be enough moisture in there to keep the eggs damp. The eggs will take about a month to hatch they will turn a blue like colour 24 hours before they are ready to hatch. The babies can't have to much water as i mentioned they will drown. But when they hatch outta there eggs… [cont.]

Eggs, snail - aquarium...?
Q. I found a snail in my aquarium, where did it come from? How long will it take to grow? What does it eat. ALSO: I have 5 White Cloud Mountain Minnows. I saw some small eggs on the bottom of the glass in my aquarium. The WCMM seems to be staing where the eggs are and protecting them? Fending off any intruders. Is this normal, the eggs are in a corner. I have guppies in with tghem, 15 gallon tank, how long do the eggs take to hatch, please help, thanks. Will the snails eat my minnows eggs

A. It hitched a ride on a plant that you put in the tank. If you got one, you got 100's, literally. Snails reproduce like mad. You now have to buy some Clown Loaches (at least two, they have to school) to clean your tank of snails. Clown Loaches work better than any snail poison, PLUS you get to have more fish.
